Journey to the West: The Story

Journey to the West: The Story

The idea for this story unfolded gradually. I'm not even sure when it first came to me, but I know it has gained momentum and taken form over the past two years.

It is loosely based on the epic Chinese saga, Journey to the West, also known as Monkey and a few other titles. It is to Chinese literature what Homer's Odyssey is to Western culture.

The story revolves around three animals, each loosely representing a religious philosophy. Max the Pig is the protagonist. He changes from being a self centered and close minded animal to an enlightened and graceful being. This story I wanted to tell is one of spiritual growth and the triumph of grace over materialism. Inspiration came from numerous legends, myths, and holy texts. I found it moving that many religious parables taught the same lessons and core values. Although the cultures which repeat them may be different on the surface, there exists an underlying unity which touches on the nature of humanity.
