Maria is a young hispanic woman in her early twenties, symbolizing grace and feminity. She is hard-working (as a waitress), warm-hearted, and wholesome looking, but suppressed by the authoritarian "gray-robes" who rule the city where she lives (The City of Piety). She is a variation on Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Maria looks after Esperanza, a young girl about 8 years old, who represents innocence and hope.
Clarissa is Maria's boss; she's older and more stern.
