A painting by Nicholas Roerich named "The Fire Blossom" captures the essence of this point in the narrative. At the pond, the animals see a lotus, here it is presented again symbolically: a glowing flower representing enlightenment.
Another painting by Nicholas Roerich depicts the austere mountains and the epic proportions of the unfolding journey. It is called "Star of the Hero."
The animals take shelter from the rain and the persuing farmer in an ancient cave, glowing from a small fire. On the wall are pictographs, similar in design to those of the Australian aboriginees. By the fire sits an old and regal horse, reminiscient of Chief Joseph or the Buddha. He is covered by a woolen shawl, similar to a Navajo rug. Shadows flicker across walls the sandy color of molten gold.
The cave is a metaphor of consciousness. Although the animals don't notice, the pictographs on the cave walls show scenes that have already taken place (a collective of memories).
